8 Tips You Need to Stay Healthy While Traveling Abroad

Whether you are traveling for business or for fun, it can easily disturb your health and fitness routine. When we are on travel, we usually say “I’m on a vacation”, so we tend to fall into the tempting snare of high-calorie meals and little exercise. But if you can do some smart packing, have a little research, and the right prioritization, I can guarantee that you’ll have the healthiest trip of your life. Follow these 10 travel tips that will help you stay healthy on the road.

  1. Make sleep a priority

Either you are in transit or upon arrival, try your very best to at least get 7 or 8 hours of sleep every night while away. Most of the time, work and recreational activities get in the way of sleep, but if you do know how to make it a priority, you can successfully have a good night’s sleep.

If you’re having difficulty with adjusting to new time zone, you can stay awake on the first day until your habitual bedtime in your new place, and then go for a complete night’s sleep to immediately adjust. Having enough sleep will help your immune system remain robust and elevate recovery, so learn to prioritize accordingly.

  1. Stretch every morning

If you are planning to have a full day ahead, devote at least 5-10 minutes every morning to stretch before you begin your long day of adventure. Try stretching your arms, legs, neck, shoulders, and back. This will have you feeling revitalized.

You don’t really have to do it every morning, you can sneak in simple neck and shoulder stretches during the day while you’re waiting for transportation, for your food, the bathroom, etc. You can also make some stretches before going to sleep, these will relax your muscles and provide you a better night sleep.

  1. Don’t skip your breakfast

Try your best to not go straight to lunch. Not eating your breakfast will make you eat out for lunch and dinner. You can make your own breakfast, you can buy a box of instant oatmeal and make it with hot water available in your hotel room or apartment before you start your day. Look for a local grocery store where you can also buy fruits and cereals. If hot water is not available, you can always grab some pastries and orange juice from a nearby bakery.

Whatever happens, just don’t skip breakfast. It’s your most important meal of the day for a purpose. It’ll provide you with the energy to start your day right!

  1. Stay hydrated

Do we even need to mention this? Wherever you go, always carry a water bottle with you. Although drinking lots of water might not be a good idea especially finding public restrooms on the road. So, just drink whatever you think is enough for you because your body will thank you.

  1. Prepare your special dietary needs

Are you gluten-intolerant, celiac, or allergic to certain foods? What you can do is to print a card that lists your dietary needs in the local language. This will be easier for you to communicate your requirements in case if there is any barrier in language. Most staff in the service industry would always like to please the customers, assuring them that something is possible without fully understanding the implications. This is a simple solution if you don’t want to risk your health problems while you’re on travel.

  1. Consider bringing gym gear and supplements

Packing your gym gear while traveling will give you the motivation to work out. If you pack your gym gear, you won’t have any excuse not to exercise. Opt for lightweight equipment such as skipping rope to heighten your workouts on the road.

Also, if you’re taking vitamins and supplements regularly, then don’t forget to pack yourself a supply for the span of your travel so that you can maintain your routine while you are away from home. Maintaining your healthy habits can give an overall effect on your well-being including making healthy choices with regards to your food and exercise while on vacation.

  1. Choose to walk every day

Traveling your destination on foot is an effective alternative for some exercise! Go grab your map and just get lost in the moment. Walking is a great way to find hidden jewels that are not specified in travel guides. But take note that wherever you’re traveling, it is best suggested to consider waking and exploring during daylight and have a travel companion to be your walking buddy for safety purposes.

  1. Pack meals and snacks

On a budget? Like to avoid greasy and processed foods while traveling? Go and pack your own meals and snacks! It’s a great idea to bring some healthy food from home to ensure what exactly goes into your food. Aside from that, this will stop you from spending money on food that doesn’t even taste great.

Before doing that, check out the rules first just to make sure you don’t get any problems at the airport security. Be cautious when traveling with fresh fruits, vegetables or meat, and dairy products as there can be possible restrictions about bringing these into other countries. If so, just make sure that you declare any food products upon arrival.

If you don’t like the idea of packing your food, do your research before traveling. To maintain a healthy lifestyle while traveling, search for a nearby grocery store or health food store to where your plan to stay and find some well-rated restaurants that offer healthy choices. And as much as possible try to find a hotel accommodation or hostel where there is a fridge available.
